What can i do with my old hair straightener that is unsafe to use anymore?

It has visible wires showing. I tried covering them with electrical tape, but when I used it, it made it arc and almost electrocuted me.I was wondering if there was anyway I could recycle it, instead of just throwing it in the trash. What can i do with my old hair straightener that is unsafe to use anymore?
Some cities will except electronics (anything with electronic parts - resisters, capacitors %26amp; etc..) at a special drop off station. My city has a special drop off day for electronics. My dad's city has an agreement with the next town over to take the old electronics of residents of my dad's city. Check your city's website for details. You don't want to put these into a land fill. Many old electronic parts contain mercury and other now banned substances. What can i do with my old hair straightener that is unsafe to use anymore?
